STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS
Some days I wake up grumpy (Help me worship You)
This was another song to come out of the 12 Song Challenge run by RESOUNDWorship. The task was set by Sam Hargreaves who, along with his wife Sara, head up engageworship. They travel around the country talking about the concept of Whole Life Worship, where our worship is so much more than just what we do on a Sunday, or even what we do in a church building or with a Christian purpose – but it is every part of our every day lives.
I think in the past, we’ve tended to be OK with this at Bodmin in that we have regularly challenged the division between what is “sacred” and what is “secular”, including things such as a regular Sunday slot to pray for members of the congregation specifically for them in their work that doesn’t involve the church – their “everyday” and that they would live that with the support of the church to be the best example of worship possible.
When the challenge was set, I completed a song fairly quickly (a modern re-work of the hymn Take my life) and I thought that month was signed off as complete. Then inspiration struck on a bike ride into work, and some fairly rapid verses and a chorus landed.
Had the chance to share the song through the 12 Song Forum and had some great feedback from people, and again, refined further through the Worship Songwriting Retreat.
I’ve loved leading this one in worship, and it brings a clear reminder that our worship is a 24/7 thing, a wherever you happen to be thing, a whatever you are doing thing, a here in this moment thing.
Don’t tell anyone, but I think the adults get just as much out of this song as the kids do!
Would be great to hear from you if you use this in your local context.
How does the world keep moving (We have a hope)
One of the challenges within the 2019 12 Song Challenge was to write a “Funeral Song”. As soon as I started thinking about the task, two particular bereavements came to mind – one almost 20 years ago where a close friend who lived with us for a while as he battled an alcohol addiction died shortly after moving out. For both my wife and I we have never felt loss like that – never felt so absolutely knocked by a situation – we probably cried ourselves to sleep for months rather than weeks. The second is also the inspiration behind the song on the EP The Journey Continues, entitled When I am broken. That song was written with the express intention of being accessible corporately to give church chance to voice some of their thoughts and questions. However, as I set about the task, I felt that I found my personal voice in response to that loss – one that I don’t think I’d actually allowed to come out as yet, so I was thankful for the challenge as it gave that words.
I guess the final line of the chorus has a different meaning for these two losses – “enter into your rest” for Adrien was a life that was promised where every waking moment wouldn’t be consumed with him resisting the cravings for a drink, and for Andrew, the rest was from Christian and secular service – a life of putting the needs of others before his own, but always keeping his eye on the prize and knowing where his eternity lay.
This is actually the second version of the song. The first version is on the EP as a Funeral Song which specifically speaks to that particular event – this is an attempt to find a broader message within the inspiration that is more able to connect congregationally.
Though seasons will change (Your unmistakable love)
This was another song that came out of the Resound Worship 12 Song Challenge, and is the title track of the most recent EP. This song came out of a particularly difficult time where things were really tough at work. Through that time, one of the things that kept me going was an overwhelming sense of God’s love surrounding me – whatever was going on, whatever had gone on and whatever would go on I could be confident that I was completely surrounded by unconditional, unmistakable love.
Some great input from friends on the forum and at the retreat saw me get this song over the line. Hope you enjoy.
Your love endures (Forever)
This song came out as part of the Resound Worship 12 Song Challenge during 2019. The challenge had been to develop a ‘seed idea’, meaning some time to spend time in a particular passage and allowing yourself to be creative without filtering your creative output, and then going back and reviewing everything that was there to see if there was something that had potential.
I did this in a number of ways and ended up stumbling upon the chorus on a cycle ride into work. It had been a particularly challenging period for me at work and this, along with another song, came out of regular reminders that God was with me, that his love was for me, and that he wouldn’t let me down.
We’ve used this quite a few times at our church and it seems to have connected with people, so hope you like it.
Who is this (Worship Him, Emmanuel)
This song came out of the 12 Song Challenge run by RESOUNDWorship over late 2018 into 2019. The challenge was to write a song for the Christmas period, and this one was intended to be broadly a performance / video piece rather than a congregational song, although could be used as the latter.

This is the original version of the song, intended to be able to be sung at a funeral. I later tweaked it to have a broader focus and both were included on the EP. However, this was the true origin of the song.
